These three concomitant pillars of action are common to all tobacco
companies worldwide and find their origin in the initial scheme to
defraud. In public and over the past decades, the industry has always
denied the health risks of tobacco, the addiction created by nicotine,
and the fact that it targets children -- although internal documents
show the contrary !
In this film, company managers themselves illustrate the incredible
schizophrenic behaviour of their industry !
Everything began back in 1953, when a secret and illegal meeting of
the industry top leaders took place in New York City. Together they
decided to conjure up a plan to deceive the public and the government,
to build a positive image of the cigarette at all costs.
This key re-enacted scene in the film helps to explain the frame of
mind of tobacco executives even up to this day.
Beyond journalistic investigation, this fact-filled scenario has a
spirit of its own. Ideas, emotions and surprises build the tale of
an ongoing adventure. The true story of a conspiracy beyond imagination,
with its own spies, undercover agents, strategy makers and collateral
victims.
